Phonics for teachers of Early Years
This session simplifies for teachers, who are new to teaching phonics, the reasons as to why we teach phonics and the methods that are used. Teachers will be taken step-by-step through the information containing useful examples and practical tips and games to use with young students.  Following the presentation teachers will be able to explain why we teach phonics using the method described and use the terminology. The presentation contains examples of teaching materials and approaches that have been successfully used in Sri Lanka.

Nimali Weerasinghe

Nimali Weerasinghe has been teaching at the British Council, Sri Lanka since 2014. She has a degree in English Language and International Relations from University of Westminster, United Kingdom and completed the Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Adults (CELTA) at International House, London. After returning to Sri Lanka, Nimali joined the British Council and teaches different age groups and levels in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Nimali has completed the Trinity Young Learner Extension Course (TYLEC) and the Cambridge Diploma in Teaching English for adults (DELTA). She incorporates phonics routinely in her lessons and experiments ways to make it a fun learning experience.
Neelam Abdul Gani

Neelam Abdul Gani has been teaching for 4 years at the British Council in Colombo. She is also a lecturer for Monash College, Australia on their foundation program for English at the Universal College Lanka. She has been awarded a BSc in Psychology and an MA in TESOL and is reading for an MSc in Applied Psychology and Behavior Change. Neelam is a trained TESOL teacher for both adults and young learners. She has completed courses accredited by the British Council to teach early years and primary young learners. She has followed courses to teach phonics and delivered information sessions to parents on using phonics to help young children read and write. Neelam currently teaches Early Years classes and was part of a successful team of teachers who were the first to teach Early Years online. Her lessons include phonics teaching and this is embedded through homework tasks. She is a current practitioner working and delivering phonics to our youngest EFL learners.
Eromi Mahamudalige

Eromi Mahamudalige has been teaching at the British Council in Colombo since 2018. She is currently reading for a BA (Hons) in TESOL and English and has been awarded CELTA and the TYLEC. Eromi teaches primary students and delivers spelling and phonics sessions in her teaching. She was also a member of a successful team of teachers who were among the first to teach Early Years online in Sri-Lanka. Her lessons are active and engaging.
